The Black and Tan Coonhound is an American breed thought to be the result of crossing the Bloodhound with the Virginia Foxhound. There also a belief that this breed is a descendant of the St. Hubert Bloodhound and the Talbot Hound which was known in England in the 11th century.

The Black and Tan Coonhound is a large and powerful working hound best known as a racoon hunter. This breed is also very successful while hunting other game such as deer, mountain lions, stag and opossum – even on difficult terrain. Black and Tan Coonhounds can withstand extremes of temperatures, can cover a lot of ground with long rhythmic strides and can hunt on even a very faint scent.

These lovable, sweet-natured and trusting dogs can be difficult to find for sale – because of this, they can be quite costly. The Black and Tan Coonhound was admitted into the American Kennel Club registry in 1945.

Height: The height for a Black and Tan Coonhound is 23-27 inches (58-68 cm.)

Weight: The weight for a Black and Tan Coonhound is 65-130 pounds (45-64 kg.)

Coat Type: The Black and Tan Coonhound has a short, dense coat. Grooming is minimal – only an occasional brushing is necessary.

Color: The color of the Black and Tan Coonhound’s coat is deep black with rich tan markings above the above the eyes, as well as on the muzzle, legs, and chest. Excessive tan markings and white anywhere on the body are not desirable.

Temperament: Black and Tan Coonhounds are intelligent, friendly, alert and loyal. They are not shy or vicious. Black and Tan Coonhound can be stubborn, therefore, on-going training may be necessary. As natural hunters, they may take off in search of a scent, so be sure to keep them on a leash or in a secure area. Also, Black and Tan Coonhounds have a tendency to bay or howl, especially if left alone for too long. This breed is known to drool or slobber.

Health: The Black and Tan Coonhound is prone to hip dysplasia. They should not be overfed. The average life span of a Black and Tan Coonhound is between 10-12 years.
