Description:
The Toy Fox Terrier is a small dog weighing
no more than seven pounds. This breed is
muscular, athletic, and has an elegant head
with perky, upright v-shaped ears, a glossy
coat and an erect, high-set short tail.
Toy Fox Terriers are graceful, well balanced,
active, intelligent and very devoted to
its master.
The Toy Fox Terrier was created by American
fanciers in the 1930s who crossed smaller
Smooth Fox Terriers with several different
toy breeds which included Italian Greyhounds,
Miniature Pinschers, Manchester Terriers
and Chihuahuas. The end result was a breed
which possesses true characteristics of
both a toy (mild & calm) and a terrier
(feisty & courageous) dog.
Toy Fox Terriers makes for a wonderful companion
and family pet. This delightful and entertaining
breed is also used as therapy dogs, hearing
dogs, and in the circus. The Toy Fox Terrier
was recognized by the American Kennel Club
in the Toy Group in 2003.
Height:
The height of a Toy Fox Terrier when measured
at the shoulder ranges between 8.5 - 11.5
inches (22 - 29 cm). The preferred height
is between 9 - 11 inches (23 - 28 cm).
Weight:
The weight for a Toy Fox Terrier is from
3.5 - 7 pounds (1.6 -3.2 kg.)
Coat
Type: The Toy Fox Terrier's
coat is short, fine and glossy. A weekly
brushing and bath when necessary is all
that's needed to keep the Toy Fox Terrier's
coat in good condition. This breed is a
light shedder.
Color:
The color of the Toy Fox
Terrier's coat, according to AKC Standard,
is white, chocolate and tan, white and black,
white and tan - or tri-color.
Temperament:
The Toy Fox Terrier is courageous, animated,
playful and robust. This breed makes for
a wonderful family pet and is very loyal
and devoted to its master. Toy Fox Terriers
are very adaptable and are content to just
laze on the couch or play for endless hours
- they remain young at heart throughout
their lifetime. Toy Fox Terriers are eager
to please and learn quickly. They are very
intelligent and can be stubborn so it's
important he has a dominant master who is
consistent with setting and enforcing rules.
Toy Fox Terriers are very alert and make
a great watch dog. This is an active breed
that needs a daily walk in addition to free
play. Toy Fox Terriers have a natural terrier
instinct to hunt - especially squirrels
- so should be kept on a leash or in a secure
area.
Health
Concerns: The Toy Fox Terrier
is generally a healthy breed with a life
expectancy of 13 - 14 years. Some health
issues which may affect a Toy Fox Terrier
include patella luxation, demodectic mange,
Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, von Willebrand's
Disease (vWD) and Congenital Hypothyroidism
with Goiter (CHG)
