Why isn't it OK to let your dog walk ahead of you? Isn't the dog just excited to be outside and is full of energy - like just wants to take off.

Please do not allow your dog to lead you!! You are its master and he/she should obey your commands and walk at your side. Allowing your dog to lead puts it in charge and for training and obedience reasons, this should never be allowed. Take charge!
