View Full Version : Thinking about getting a Dalmatian
I'm thinking of getting a Dalmatian and I've got a couple of questions...First, do they shed a lot? And second, are they hyper dogs?
Thanks!
Kim
Hi Kim!
Yes, Dalmatians do shed...as a matter of fact, they shed a lot throughout the year. Their hair is stiff and short and unfortunately it clings to most surfaces. However, you can try and reduce shedding by brushing him daily (if possible) OUTSIDE and feeding him a proper diet. Give your dog a good, brisk brush often and you should see a difference. Also, by frequently brushing your Dalmatian, you'll help him/her stay clean - without disturbing their protective skin oils.
Are Dalmatians hyper? Depends - they certainly can be and actually are very well known to be. So, if you plan on leaving your Dal left alone all day and/or ignored into the evening, this is probably not the dog for you. If you have lots of time to spend with your Dalmatian and can keep him/her active as well as enroll him/her in obedience training, you're off to a good start! :)
We suggest you steer clear of a poorly bred Dalmatians. These types are notorious for being extremely hyperactive and can even display neurotic behavior!
Properly bred Dalmatians can be GREAT dogs!! Be sure to keep them active (couple walks a day) and give them loads of love. ;)
Best of luck to you!
